I am a real onlooker. A passer-by. I am worried, I wring my hands, but I do nothing.
How do we become, who we are? How is our moral compass installed in us? I am much more than my DNA and my family tree; I also carry the traces of society and all of society’s things.
Society, ideology, cultural sphere, upbringing, the words for how the group shapes the individual are many.
What initially shaped the final works was the story of “The Good German”, Georg F. Duckwitz, who was a resident of the archive building in the years 1941-53.
He must have been in the most difficult negotiations of his identity during and after the occupation. I can only begin to imagine, how dangerous each word might be.
Today’s mass media consumer is under constant pressure to act on the catastrophes of the world, because we now witness everything, often visually and close to real time.
The frustration of watching the cruel madness of the world and feeling unable to change anything was the starting point for this work.
