LOOKING WITH THE BODY
Interview with artists Elina Brotherus and SMITH for Katalog – journal for photography and video.
How does a photographer look with the entire body? Elina Brotherus switches on a form of visual thinking and SMITH (Dorothée Smith) engages with science to go beyond the regime of the visual. For one of them, their initial meeting was formative, and even today a warm relationship remains between the two.
The meeting that brought together Finnish artist Elina Brotherus (1972) and French artist SMITH (1985) resulted in Brotherus’s double portrait entitled Teacher and Student, Self-Portrait with Dorothée Smith. They met during a class, called ‘Ecology of Emotion’ led by Brotherus, where SMITH initiated her first interdisciplinary work, C19H28O2 (Agnès), an installation based on synthetic testosterone.
